  21. GENERAL NOTES

  23. Program Requirements.
  24. *This program runs on Windows NT 3.51 (tm), NT 4.0 or Windows 95 (tm) or newer.
  25. (all the preceding are trademarks or registered trademarks of the
  26. Microsoft Corporation).
  27. *Approximately 1.5MB disk space
  28. *TCP/IP Network connection with DNS
  29.  
  30. Network connection notes.
  31. An actively running connection to a network using a Windows Sockets
  32. (or compatible) link is suggested for DNS resolution.  Works with network cards
  33. connected to TCPIP networks or through dialup connections to internet providers.
  34. If you use dialup, you must be using a SLIP or PPP connection (TIA and Slirp work
  35. fine for all functions except ping and traceroute which require a static IP).

  67. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
  68.  
  69. 1. If this file was zipped. Unzip and copy all files to a new,
  70.    empty directory (folder).
  71. 2. Close this file.
  72. 3. Run setup.exe from your preferred file management program.
  73.  Be sure to install this program in a directory different than the directory
  74.  created in step 1 above.
  75. 4. Follow the instructions in the setup program.

  78. **If you are upgrading a Registered Version 3.00.x to this version, you must:
  79. a) Run your old 3.00.x at least once prior to using this installer.
  80. b) Exit your old 3.00.x Registered Version
  81. c) Run setup.exe and choose Upgrade Registered 3.00.x Version when asked.
  82. d) Install this new version to the directories found by the installer.
  83. e) Run your new NetScanTools version to complete the upgrade.

  91. VERSION. IF YOU DO COMPLETE THE INSTALLATION, IT WILL INSTALL

  121.       some small layout changes were made to support the simplification.

  123.     Socket Services and Protocols tabs combined into the Database Tests tab.
  124.     Ping and Traceroute have two results view styles--list and classic views.
  125.       Copying a cell in the listview is done automatically by selecting it.
  126.       A status/message area has been added to supplement the listview.
  127.     How to Purchase tabs has buttons for activating shell enabled shortcuts
  128.       to web site html pages and email addresses. Requires a web browser
  129.       and/or email program defined as the default for these type of
  130.       operations.
  131.     Corrected color problems for certain combinations of text colors and
  132.       background color schemes.
  133.     Corrected a problem where the Copy All feature would only copy an "F"
  134.       on certain client tabs.
  135.     The property sheet button previously labeled "go" has been removed.
  136.     NetScanTools can now be minimized as a Taskbar Tray icon or to the
  137.       Taskbar on Windows 95 and NT 4.0. See the Preferences Tab. NT 3.51
  138.       minimizes to the desktop.

  141.     All client results windows fonts can now be set on the Preferences tab.
  142.       This font setting is the same for all tabs and for the printouts.
  143.     Corrected a font size problem on the Name Server Lookup and Whois tabs.
  144.     Corrected a font size problem that existed when pasting text into
  145.       Microsoft Word from the Name Server Lookup and Whois tabs.
  146.     Name Server Lookup results window will now expand to full size for
  147.       registered users. Set from the Preferences tab-Registered version only.
  148.     Socket Services database translation test now tests port numbers
  149.       1-65535.
  150.     Several text changes for clarification.

  187. NetScanTools contains a number of ports of UNIX functions:

  189. nslookup    full implementation of name server lookup
  190. finger        gets info about users on remote systems
  191. ping        determines ability to reach a remote host
  192. traceroute    determines route taken to reach a remote host
  193. whois        a lookup utility for determining registered internet names etc.
  194. daytime        returns the time of day on a remote host
  195. quote        returns quote of the day from a remote host
  196. character generator
  197.         a client that accesses a chargen service to determine
  198.         your link speed.
  199. Time Sync    Use network time servers to synchronize your computer's clock.
  200. Echo        connect to a remote host's echo daemon and send and receive
  201.         characters.
  202. IDENT Server    Identifies your computer to remote services that request info.
  203.         Fully configurable.

  207. NetScanner    A easy to sequentially ping an IP address range to find
  208.         the active computers. Will also resolve the IPs to host names.

  217. This section applies if you are evaluating the shareware version.

  219. Evaluation period:
  220.  30 days for those who have never used NetScanTools before.
  221.  15 days for those who have used earlier versions of NetScanTools.
  222.   7 days for those who have used this exact version before.

  224. At the end of your evaluation period more reminder messages will appear.
  225. The program will still operate.

  227. If you would like to use this product beyond your evaluation period and
  228. would like access to priority technical support and upgrades, please use the

  262. splash dialog box as the installer starts and a shaded red background in the
  263. installer. The shareware version may also be identified by the presence of a

  265. in the program titlebar.
